Old Waconian Freya Blount, Class of 2014, will be representing Great Britain in the Australian Football International Cup in Melbourne later this year.
Part of the first GB women’s team to ever compete in the Aussie Rules (AFL) competition, The Swans, Freya was named as a marquee player ahead of her main team selection – after only taking up the sport two years ago.
Freya said: “I wanted to do something totally different so picked the weirdest sport I could find, which was AFL.”
Playing in the position of ruck, her contribution to the team is one of the most physical roles to have in the 18-a-side sport and is currently working on her fitness in preparation for the games.
“It’s exciting… taking gold in the European Championships really set our mark within Europe and we’re training for the same success in Melbourne,” tells Freya.
Becoming involved in AFL whilst studying Economics at the University of Birmingham, Freya’s sporting spark came largely on the back of her love of playing touch rugby at CHS and captaining the girls’ netball team.
In her final year at University, Freya is currently working hard to combine her studies and training.
Passionate about promoting women’s sport, Freya worked on the latest “This Girl Can” campaign last summer whilst interning for FCB Inferno in London.
“Other than the football in Melbourne I’m most looking forward to visiting schools and inspiring young girls to get involved in sport, particularly as the AFLWL has launched this year,” she says.
Freya and The Swans will tour Canada next month then play in the World Cup in Melbourne in August.
