CHS Remembers… 1944
The CHS Community gathered together today for the annual Service of Remembrance, to honour the memory of those fallen and those affected by war.
Standing in front of the Main Building, the School joined together and heard heartfelt readings from CHS Head, Mr Lee Richardson; Deputy Head (Academic), Mr Nick Axon; Senior Deputy Head, Mrs Caroline Dunn; CHS Junior School Head, Mr Vincent Weightman; Student Manager, Mrs Charlotte Whatson; Chair of the Alumni Board, Mrs Amanda Newman; Head of Hall, Mrs Hannah Hull; Sixth Formers Lucas and Emily; Upper School pupil Preeya; and Lower School pupils Daisy and Josh.
The poignant readings were shared in memory of those who lost their lives in the war, as well as those lives who have been irreversibly changed by the impact of conflict and war throughout the years.
This year, contributions from across the CHS Community, including parents, pupils, Old Waconians, staff and supporters beyond the School gates, brought an added tribute, with knitted and crocheted poppies displayed on the steps of the Main Building.
CHS musicians played the Last Post, leading into a reflective 2-minute silence. Memorial silhouettes which represented Old Waconians who died during the war were crafted by DT Technician Mr Angus Tulloch and placed in a field of remembrance.
Three wreaths were laid before the Main Building and the names of Old Waconians who died in 1944 were read aloud by OW Tony Foulkes (Class of 1965), marking a moment of shared remembrance across generations.
