The importance of people and Manchester’s community was a hot topic when DJ and journalist, Dave Haslam visited CHS’s Music School as the special guest for the Head’s inaugural chEd Talk.
Speaking with CHS Head, Mr Neil Smith, in front of a live audience of parents, students and staff, Dave – usually the interviewer during his own In Conversation appearances – took his seat in the spotlight to answer questions about his career and latest book, ‘Sonic Youth Slept on My Floor.’
Answering questions about Manchester before, during and after the impact of legendary nightclub The Hacienda, Dave spoke about his early ambition to be a writer, how he became a DJ, his time living in Paris and the interesting characters he met along the way including Factory Records boss Tony Wilson and Joy Division/New Order manager Rob Gretton.
Dave spoke about his aim to convey a positive message throughout his latest book and how the story evolved despite being written at the time of the Bataclan, Paris and Manchester Arena terror attacks.
The audience also heard about Dave’s decision to sell his beloved vinyl collection and he even treated them to an anecdote not included in the book.
Following the discussion Dave took questions from the floor, speaking of a memorable experience traveling to the USA to DJ in Ohio, Pennsylvania, the role of creativity in the North and strength of the female creatives working within the music industry today.
