The Season of Giving
The CHS Community has embraced the holiday spirit this term with a series of altruistic activities.
Wellspring Collection & Soup Kitchen
Upper School pupils have made a tangible difference by packing rucksacks for the Wellspring Rucksack Project. Each form filled a bag with essential items to support homeless and housing-vulnerable individuals.
The Sixth Form Charities Committee has led the initiative and has been working to raise awareness of homelessness through thought-provoking assemblies and by organising a CHS Soup Kitchen. Annie, CHS Sixth Form Charities lead, said:
“Over the last two weeks, the Charities Committee has run a number of altruistic activities to help provoke thought about homelessness in our local area and how this particularly affects people during the winter months.
“On Monday 2nd December, in the whole of the Senior School, we served a soup kitchen-style lunch and over the last few weeks we have been collecting donations of food and hygiene products and sorting them to deliver to local charities supporting the homeless – Chelwood Foodbank, Mustard Tree, and The Wellspring. We hope that these activities have made pupils think about the difficulties the homeless face and how it is a prominent cause in and around Manchester especially.”
The Junior School joined in too, contributing food donations and raising over £500 for The Wellspring through collections at their end-of-year productions.
Mission Christmas
Meanwhile, Lower School pupils have kept tradition alive by supporting Mission Christmas. Waconians donated 400 gifts for local children and families to make sure everyone has something special to open on Christmas morning. Allen House topped the leaderboard for the most donations.
Christmas Dinner with Smithy Green
Christmas Dinner Day is a cherished tradition at CHS, and this year it was made extra special as local residents were invited to join the celebrations. Seven guests enjoyed a lively lunch with the F1 in Schools team, complete with carol singing and plenty of festive cheer!
Upper School Waconian Oliver said: “It was a pleasure to have Christmas dinner with the local residents at Smithy Green. I thoroughly enjoyed learning about their lives as well as talking to them about ours!”
Festive Market
Who needs Manchester Christmas markets when we’ve got the CHS Festive Market! This year’s market featured stalls brimming with homemade goodies, including bracelets and sweet treat bags. All funds raised went to the House Charities.
CHS Christmas Concert in Aid of Pete Twist
Each year, CHS’s Music Department organises a Christmas Concert to spread festive cheer, showcase the talent of our musical Waconians, and raise money for a good cause. This year’s concert was dedicated to the memory of Old Waconian Pete Twist, with all proceeds from ticket sales donated to Macmillan Cancer Support. You can read about Pete’s story here.
