Waconian earns prestigious Arkwright Engineering Scholar Award

Huge congratulations to Waconian Jasmine, who has been confirmed as an Arkwright Scholar!

The Arkwright Trust is an Independent charity founded in 1990, and was set up to give exciting opportunities to students who are actively considering higher education in Engineering, Product or Industrial Design or Architecture.

The Arkwright Engineering Scholarship is widely respected by academia and industry, and opens opportunities for recipients to develop links, take part in enrichment activities, and access to mentoring as well as offering support in young people’s studies towards a career in Engineering.

The selection process is very competitive, with this year seeing a record number of submissions of 1532, 32.8% of them being female.

Jasmine shared how she found the process: “For my application, I did an investigation into how the angle of an aeroplane’s wing affects the lift force it experiences, and I had to repair an old manometer and wing section to do this. This was really enjoyable and interesting for me and I learnt a lot and I got some help from my dad who used to be an aerospace engineer.”

I then had to do an aptitude test where I had to design solutions to different briefs, for example designing a hand held machine for scattering salt in winter. This was probably the most fun exam I’ve ever done. Mrs Metcalfe said that we probably wouldn’t enjoy it because it’s an exam, but 2 hours, sitting in silence, designing strange contraptions is honestly my idea of heaven!

Jasmine will be formally presented with her certificate at a ceremony hosted by The Institution of Engineering and Technology, London in October.
