"Pupils' success in sport has been promoted by an increased focus on improving the quality of PE by the leadership of the school and by the provision of outstanding facilities by the governing body." - ISI Inspection, April 2017

Education Through Sport

Sport at CHS embodies the School’s core values of integrity, endeavour, resilience, compassion and contribution.

Participation in physical activity helps our students grow, learn, and enjoy themselves whilst developing and applying their personal, physical, and intellectual skills. CHS values the learning inherent in participation in sport: the pursuit of excellence through personal development and teamwork, ethical and responsible behaviour, adherence to the spirit and meaning of rules, leadership and strength of character, and sportsmanship – respect for one’s opponents, acceptance of victory with humility and acknowledgement of defeat with grace.

In fostering these qualities in our students, CHS instils habits which will lead Waconians to better and healthier lives; and while winning is not an end in itself, we believe that the efforts by our students to be their best will lead them to be successful.

The Sporting Programme at CHS

The sports experience is integral to a CHS education.  Through a PE curriculum which develops physical skill and an appreciation of health-related exercise, a Games programme which introduces students to a range of team-based and individual sports and a Co-Curricular programme enabling every student to further explore and develop their sporting interests, we seek to provide a modern, varied and enjoyable experience of sport and physical exercise.

Our staff are educators committed to CHS’s educational vision for every student to experience a challenging, dynamic and relevant education which enables them to reach their full academic potential and flourish in a rapidly changing world; they share the view that every student has the right to the highest quality of teaching and learning and are committed to delivering excellence.

The Role of Sport in Building Community and Pride in CHS

We believe that physical health and well-being are vital in the educational experience of young people. Sport offers lessons in self-discipline, teamwork, leadership, communication and resilience, all of which we hold to be vital as part of the full CHS education.

We have excellent sporting and physical education facilities and all our students are encouraged to try their hand at a range of sports and fitness activities, whatever their level of ability. A large number of teams are offered which provide students with many opportunities to represent the School in a wide range of sports at different levels. We compete with other schools, both regionally and further afield.

Our team of dedicated specialist coaches help develop the skills of our students of all ages and many members of teaching staff manage teams and deliver coaching sessions themselves, helping to develop strong relationships between students and teachers.
